Also about the same time my antivirus icon disappeared from the tray. When I try to start exel it asked for my original installation disk.

some dektops are coupled with old USB technologies and for which you might need to install the apprpriate drivers to recognize the pen drive.. the drivers would have supplied to u by the pen drive manufacturer or u may find it anywhere on the net..
secondly, one of the excel .dll files seem to be corrupted.. you wud require the appropriate office cd to do a troubleshott installation of the office...

Can I use an external Disc Rewriter for my laptop?

The Disc drive on my laptop isn't working and I haven't been able to play sims 3 for ages, play DVD's On my laptop or anything else that requires a disc. I've been looking at external disc rewriters online but they say it's for netbooks as they have no disc drive included. Yes you can use an external drive on a laptop and the full size ones (that need an external psu) will burn faster than an internal one

also you can change the internal drive its just a matter of one or 2 screws then pulling it out swapping the mounting supports to the new drive and swapping the bezel off the old drive to the new one

one thing you should check before getting a new drive is its not a software problem .

open the device manager and check there is not an exclamation mark against the cd drive before getting a new one
