I have a home network with DSL, a router, a desktop, and a laptop. The desktop is in another room and inconvenient to use. I would like to access files and run programs from the desktop on my laptop computer. Can I do this within XP? Do I need a separate program? What do people recommend?

You can use remote desktop if the computer you are using has XP Pro or Home and the one that you want to take control of is XP Pro. On the computer that you want to control (xp PRO) make sure you go to Control panel- system properties--remote tab and Enable Remote Desktop on this computer. You can select remote users that can use this function. By default all Administrators can use this. The users that are going to remotely access this computer MUST have a password.
Now go to the other computer and go to Start --All Programs--Accessories--Remote Desktop Connection---Use that to connect to the Remote Computer.

Can someone please tell me how I would be able to transfer a folder (containing sitcom episodes) from my desktop computer to a laptop computer? Thanks.

If there are several episodes, and they are not copy-protected by DRM or HDCP, these files are probably too big to conveniently transfer to USB Flash Drives. Try an External USB or Firewire Hard Drive. Get a nice big one, since they are cheap right now, and you can always find other uses for a hard drive in the future. I don't know what formats the files are in, but if the laptop has the playback software and any needed CODECs, a simple Windows Copy-Paste cycle should do the trick.
