The Express base station comes with 1 wired ethernet port (for the WAN connection), 1 USB port (for printer/hard drive sharing), and 1 audio connection (for connecting a stereo system to use with itunes). The Extreme has 4 wired ethernet ports (1 WAN and 3 LAN) and USB. The Extreme uses 802.11n networking, which improves the range and speed of the network, but you'll only get the full benefits if you have an 802.11n wireless card in your laptop.
