I am a high school student, currently using a school laptop (a Dell Latitude D630.) However, I'm moving and will have to return it to the school when I do so. I really like the functionality of a laptop, so I want to get one at my new location.
I'll be using the laptop for word, itunes, the internets, and photo storage and editing.
What would you recommend?
As you can see from the other answers, different people would have different opinions.
I would recommend you to check ProCompare.com. They have a recommendation engine that ranks laptops (and other tech products) based on ratings and reviews from a community of trusted IT professionals. They also have a cool personalization slider that lets you personalize the results based on the criteria that are most important to YOU.

I'm a student of animation, and I work with softwares like photoshop, Maya, Combustion and 3D Studio Max.. what stuff should i keep in mind when buying a laptop and which brands are most reliable?
I know a lot of people working with animation use Macs. It's just a kind of well known fact. I really don't know an exact reason but macs must just be able to work smoothly with animation and graphics. But looking in the pc realm. Your going to need a descent processor Id say at min. a low end dual core. High mem. 2gigs at the least. Then comes a graphics card. I'd just shop around for a good value but your not going to want to skimp in this department. The thing is these programs need to be able to open fast, do a complex task, and then run a render of that job in 3-D
