What are some helpful tips for choosing a new notebook computer?

I'm looking to buy a new notebook and I need some tips to buy the right one. I know i want one with 802.11abgn built in and with at least 2GB of RAM and at least 120GB hard drive. I want a fast processor for multitasking. Can someone please advise if i'm overlooking anything or if there is something new like new processors coming in the next few months. Any tips or ideas would help thanks.
Mostly I will do music applications like music editing and maybe video.

What you want to do with it.
Example:
If you are playing lots of games, you'll want a laptop with a good graphics card.
Likewise, if you are going to college, you'll want a light-weight one, that has good office programs and capabilities.
If you are doing lots of music and video editing, a big hard drive with processing power is good.

It all depends on what exactly you want to do.

What causes a notebook USB port to no longer recognize flash drives?

My girl was using the shared Acer notebook with three visible USB ports. She was listening to a music track on Windows Media Player when suddenly the computer "disowned" the flash drive. It will also not recognize mine. Without resetting the notebook to its factory settings, is there any other way to get it to recognize the flash drives again??

I tried to update the driver, but it didn't work.

I recently had USB problems related to a power surge on the USB port. I'm using Windows XP and it reported the problem with a pop-up message that said I needed to remove the device and reset the port (using the reset button in the pop-up) or the port would be disabled. If you didn't get this message or closed it, try going to Device Manager and make sure all of the USB ports are enabled. You may have already done this when you updated the driver.
