Hard drives, also known as hard disks or HDD, are the "brain" of the computer. Without it, you cannot store word documents, pictures, music files, video clips and even computer applications. It is invented in 1956 for the IBM accounting computer (for your information, computer during that time fills up a room). Before, you can only save up to 120 MB basically for file storage only. Now, you can choose if you want a 320 GB or 2 TB storage space. You can also choose if you want a 5400 or 7200 rotations per minute (rpm). A faster hard drive speed means that it can access and save files quicker. A bigger memory space means that it can hold many or bigger files. If you are usually make computer applications, animations or computer illustrations; then the most advanced hard drive is more necessary. If you are a basic home user, then an ordinary hard drive will work for you.
A hard drive looks like a running gramophone player with the gramophone record player inside, only smaller and faster. The thin discs, or platters, are the objects that the hard drive used to store files and applications. Many platters are attached to the spindle, which is then attached to a motor that make the platters rotate fast. A metal strip with a tiny magnet, or the head, put the files and relocates them when the computer instructs it; just like the technology used in cassette tapes and VHS. A small circuit attached at the bottom or filmware is the one essential for receiving and sending files from the hard drive to the CPU.
Years ago, PATA or Parallel AT Attachment is used to attach the hard drive to the mother board. It looks like a thick cable that is attached to the IDE or Integrated Drive Electronics on the mother board. Today, it is being replaced by SATA (Serial AT Attachment) or SCSI (Small Computer System Interface). It looks like a small cable and it is attached to a specially designed SCSI port. A SCSI frees the space inside the CPU which is usually the problem in using PATA. You can also buy external hard drives on the market. It is quite the same as an internal hard drive, only it has a hard cover and USB (Universal Serial Bus). As long that your CPU has a USB connector, then you can attach it anytime.
Hard drives are not only seen in Personal Computers, it can be also seen in other computer devices. Laptops or notebooks are portable computers with a specific hard drive built inside these. Other gadgets such as cell phones, gaming consoles, audio and video devices also had a mini hard drive that enables the user to store files. Sooner or later, a hard drive could also be seen on robots and appliances.
