Hewlett Packard Pavilion millinium me. How to completly erase?
wondering how to completly erase everything, going to use system recovery. ive used system recovery but i talked to a computer dude and he says when you use system recovery, it dont erase everything, it just goes over the top of everything and compounds it, making my computer slow, so i was wondering if anyone knew how to get rid of everything before i use it again,help! help! would appriciate some help to my question.
Reinstalling the OS (WinME in your case) will reformat the hard disk and completely erase all the data on the disk. If you have the WinME installation disk, or the disks that came with the computer, you can reinstall the OS, which will also reformat the hard drive and create a new install. A computer that old almost certainly came with install disks (maybe even a couple dozen floppies)--home computers weren't doing install partitions yet.
First back up any programs or data that you know you need. On a computer that old, you may have a hard time finding compatible replacement programs. But you can go to http://oldversion.com to get old versions of many popular programs.
If you don't have the installation disks, but you have the Win ME key, you can install somebody else's version of ME, using your key to activate it. Where you're going to find ME these days I have no idea. You might consider Win98 SE if you can't find ME, but you need a legitimate key to activate the OS.
If you can't get a disk, you can try slipstreaming an installation, which is a method of copying install and update files from your computer, creating a disk image, and burning this to a bootable install CD. It is too complicated for me to explain here. If you want to investigate this, I recommend asking another Y!A question, and be sure to point out to people that you want to slipstream WinME, not XP.
I'm with your computer dude--system recovery sometimes works well, and sometimes messes up your computer. With an old install, I'll put my money on the mess. Do a clean install. I did a clean install of Win98 SE on a friend's computer a few months ago, and with the addition of 128MB RAM (cost $11) and some well chosen programs, he has a computer that works really well--the bootup speed shocked me it was so fast, and he even connected a USB Wi-Fi dongle to it.
